Turnover

Around here, if you're gone for 10 days the whole face of the neighborhood can change. After a trip in June we came home to find the house next door for rent and the neighbors moving out. This week we came home to find the house had sold to a Hispanic family with a cow dog named Heinrick. (Heinrick escaped from the back yard last night and got himself lost before they ever moved in.)

The people on the corner also moved while we were gone. Their garage was happily packed with bikes and balls and other paraphernalia for a family of boys. As we drove home on Monday we noticed that there was nothing in the garage except a sedan. No mini-van. No skateboards. No kids.

It's not like we know our neighbors here anyway. Everyone stays indoors. Still, these people were part of our street, and now they are gone, I kind of miss them.

That would make me sad too - even if I didn't know them. Almost like life is moving forward without taking you with it.
